1. Nominations open for National Teachers Hall of Fame - DUE: 01/04/10

The National Teachers Hall of Fame honors exceptional career teachers, encourages excellence in teaching, and preserves the rich heritage of the teaching profession in the United States. Maximum award: $2,000. Eligibility: Nominees must have a minimum of 20 years full-time preK-12 teaching experience, and hold a valid teaching certificate or license from the state in which he or she teaches or has taught. 2. Applications now available for Black United Fund scholarships - DUE: 01/15/10

The Black United Fund of Oregon's Scholarship Application for the 2010-11 school year is now available. BUFOR is offering over 21 scholarships totaling $490,000!  Scholarships are available to five different institutions: Concordia University, George Fox University, Lewis & Clark College, University of Portland and Willamette University. 3. College planning podcasts from EducationQuest

EducationQuest brings students a new way to hear what they need to know about planning and paying for college. The podcasts provide in-depth information on topics such as financial aid, the FAFSA, scholarships and preparing for college. The podcasts are available for download at http://www.educationquest.org/podcasts.asp.

4. The Oregonian: Oregon universities try to recruit more Latino students

With stacks of college brochures and her own story as proof, Andrea Arce travels across Oregon telling Latino students that they can go to college.

It doesn't take a 4.0 and a rich family, she says at recent stop at Forest Grove High School. She never thought she could get into college or afford to go until she got a scholarship to Western Oregon University.

"One step at a time," she tells a student. "You can do it."
